a normal Halloween for us
Raising my kids was quite interesting.
Especially around the holidays.
What would come out of them was hard to tell.
Though with the dentist I was investing
To be sure their teeth wouldn't decay.
When it came time for tricks or treats
Costumes were made by my mom.
She'd go by what the popular cartoons were.
They always thought theirs were neat.
And really excited to try them on.
Then came the walk to the neighbors
They had to stop by all their friends.
Going in groups for their own safety
Saying their costumes weren't from stores.
And totally exhausted by the end.
Back home though we went through the candy.
Sorting it for the flavor and which to keep.
Of course, daddy would plunder the best.
They never minded sharing it with mommy.
But he never took the kind that was cheap.
After the initials sugar rush was gone
We then sorted the rest to keep as treats
The kids agreed so they could keep their teeth.
We all eventually forgot it as time went on.
The new Halloween revealed the remaining sweets.

I wrote this for a contest but didn't add it.

My scary dad.
As a child, we used to go door to door
around the various neighborhoods.
Hoping we'd be the kids to get more.
wishing for only the candy that was good.
While at home, my dad had fun.
He'd decorate the yard up bright.
As if for a contest he was never outdone.
It was his most enjoyable night.
He'd close off the foyer from ceiling to floor.
Rigged a ball in a glowing sheet that'd flow
It'd fly out at you when he opened the door.
He'd be all dressed in black from head to toe,
While the kids would come up the walk
he was waiting watching from where he hid.
He opened the door wide on their first knock
The glowing ghost flew out at unsuspecting kids.
They'd scream in horror and run in fear.
As he held a picture of tomato juice
His thumb on fire and a white slit from ear to ear.
One child was frightened clear out of his shoes.
All the parents from the neighborhood
Had to come and see my dad scary show.
His haunting vampire act was really good.
They didn't wait for candy they'd just turn to go.
His line as he spoke to them was
'WOULD YOU LIKE A DRINK OF BLOOD?' Then gave his spine-chilling laugh.
it got them every time.

It never failed he always had a full bowl by the end of the night. and we'd come home with full bags.
We were the house next door that kept the candy while putting on the show.
When I had my own kids I'd sort the candy they worked so hard to get then give it to them slowly. instead of all at once. Eventually, we'd forget about it since they got the best things first. By the following Halloween, they still had candy in their bags. but they went through the whole neighborhoods as well.
